Bible verses for grief and loss, often read at funerals and memorial services or written in sympathy cards. The list includes passages chosen especially often, such as Psalm 23, John 11:25–26 and Revelation 21:4, as well as less familiar ones.

Choosing a verse for a funeral or a card

Families often choose a verse together with the minister, pastor or priest who leads the service. It may be printed in the funeral program or an obituary, read during the service or written in a card. A verse the person who died held dear, or the one from their baptism or wedding, is a common choice. Read each verse in its chapter before you decide, and keep the length in mind: on a card or in a program, one or two lines are usually enough. If your church uses a particular translation, its wording may differ from the BSB, KJV and WEB shown here.
